Wisdom Tooth Extraction
What are Wisdom Tooth?
The wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the final teeth to erupt and typically show up between the ages of 17 and 25. Four, one at each corner of the mouth, are found in most persons. The lack of room in modern jaws can lead to problems, including crowding, infections, misalignment, and impaction, which is the trapping of teeth in the gums or jaw. Many people need their wisdom teeth extracted to avoid discomfort, decay, or harm to neighbouring teeth, even though some wisdom teeth erupt normally and don’t need to be treated.
Why extract your Wisdom Tooth?
At some time, your dentist may propose that you have your wisdom teeth out, or you may have heard of others getting them extracted. Ever wonder why?
Most people have a reduced jaw space, thus the permanent second molars or the surrounding bone and/or gums will prevent their wisdom teeth from fully emerging in the mouth. It is believed that these wisdom teeth are impacted. The most common reason your dentist would suggest wisdom tooth extraction is to treat impacted wisdom teeth.
The impacted wisdom tooth may only partially show through the gums (partially affected), or it may never appear through the gums at all (completely impacted). Additionally, the wisdom teeth may develop at a straight angle, seemingly “lying” down, or at an angle toward or away from the second molar.
What are the complications of Impacted Wisdom Toot?
Sometimes, there is no discomfort associated with an impacted wisdom tooth. You might not even be aware that you possess one. But if you leave it in your jaw, it might cause a lot of other issues.
A partly impacted wisdom tooth and the surrounding gums can readily trap food. Additionally, maintaining the cleanliness of the wisdom tooth is difficult due to its position. Because of these elements, it is a perfect place for bacteria to grow and cause cavities or excruciating gum disease.
However, empty spaces could develop between the two teeth if the wisdom tooth is developing at an angle to the second permanent molar. Food becomes readily caught between them and is unable to be removed with brushing or flossing.
In addition to causing cavities and decay on the wisdom tooth, the bacteria that develop in these pockets also harm the neighbouring molar. When that occurs, more expensive operations like root canal therapy may be necessary to restore them. You can even lose your permanent second teeth in extreme circumstances.
Further, the wisdom tooth may grow in a sac inside the jawbone, which could fill with fluid and develop into a cyst that harms the surrounding teeth, nerves, and bones. In rare cases, a non-cancerous tumour may form, necessitating the removal of bone and tissue.
These problems appear slowly and without any prior warning. When symptoms do appear, they lead to anxiety, distress, more expensive dental procedures, and needless interruptions to one’s routine.
What happens during a wisdom tooth consultation?
Dr. Fahad will do a comprehensive dental examination and take some oral x-rays to assess the alignment and condition of your wisdom teeth during your first appointment at the Horizon Implants dental clinic. Dr. Fahad may suggest surgery based on the condition of the wisdom teeth.
How should I prepare for wisdom tooth surgery?
Getting ready for dental surgery at the Horizon Implants clinic, a wisdom tooth operation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing you to return home the same day. Here are a few general guidelines that you can adhere to, though Dr. Fahad will provide you with particular advice regarding what to do before the wisdom teeth surgery:
Have a good meal before the Wisdom Tooth Surgery.
Eating and drinking will be challenging for you because your jaw will be numb for around three hours after the procedure.
Brush and clean your teeth well.
This reduces the possibility of an infection developing in your wound after surgery.
Arrange for someone to take you home after the wisdom tooth surgery.
You could have confusion after wisdom teeth surgery because the process requires anesthetic. It will be much safer to have someone bring you home.
What can I expect during Wisdom Tooth Surgery?
Even though wisdom teeth surgery is a minor surgical operation that is done under local anesthetic, you have the option to have the treatment done under general anesthesia or while sedated if you are anxious about it.
In order to view the wisdom teeth and surrounding bone, the surgeon (Dr. Fahad) will pull the gums that cover them during the procedure. After that, the tooth is sectioned and extracted. This is followed by the gums being sewn back into place.
What should I do after wisdom tooth surgery?
The little bleeding that may occur after wisdom teeth surgery can be managed by nibbling on gauze. For the rest of the day, you should likewise take it easy. Our dentist will grant you up to five days of medical leave so that you can recuperate from the treatment. You should refrain from doing the following during this time:
- Use of a straw to suction liquid
- Brushing your teeth
- Spitting
- hard workout
- Drinking carbonated beverages
After your wisdom tooth surgery, you may experience minor bleeding. These activities may cause the blood clot to dislodge and reveal the bone and nerves, resulting in a painful condition known as dry socket. This is because a blood clot will form in the tooth socket where the wisdom tooth was extracted in order to hasten the healing process. You can get in touch with Dr. Fahad right away if you have this condition.
How is pain managed after Wisdom Tooth Surgery?
Painkillers can help minimize any pain or small swelling that may occur over the next 24 to 72 hours. Another way to reduce pain during the first eighteen hours is to apply an ice pack to the outside of your face every five minutes.
To help with pain management, our dentist surgeon might recommend painkillers. It is best to take these medications with lots of clear drink to avoid or lessen nausea because some of them cause it.
To prevent infection, it’s essential to practice proper dental hygiene during the healing phase. On the day following surgery, you could:
- With the exception of the wound, clean your entire mouth with a soft toothbrush.
- Use antibacterial mouthwash or warm salt water to rinse your mouth often.
Additionally, Dr. Fahad can prescribe antibiotics, which you should take exactly as prescribed.
After wisdom teeth surgery, recovery usually takes three to five days. Five to seven days following the wisdom tooth procedure, our dentist could arrange a follow-up appointment at Horizon Implants’ office. Dr. Fahad will examine your wound and take out your stitches during the visit.
